Why do college gymnasts have more entertaining floor routines than elites?
It’s no secret that many of the top women’s college gymnastics teams bring far more fans and generate far more energy than the world’s top elite gymnasts. Some of us can recall “thunderous” crowd eruptions at isolated competitions like the U.S. Olympic Trials, the world championships, and at various moments in the Olympic Games. But the curious truth is that college teams like Georgia and UCLA experience reactions like those on a weekly basis during their competitions seasons. Why is that?
Well I think one reason may be evident in the videos below. As you take a look at these floor routines, notice the performance aspect, the energy that each gymnast creates herself, and how much fun each gymnast seems to be having. I feel that all of these are seriously lacking in women’s elite gymnastics.
Of course, elite gymnasts are doing some more difficult tumbling passes, and thus much of their focus is centered around them. But then again, several of the gymnasts below show far better double layouts than any we see on the world stage today. Notice that Jamie Dantscher, Stella Umeh, and even Kate Richardson appear more powerful during their college years than some of the world’s best elite tumblers. Personally, I wonder if elite gymnasts are kept too thin to be that powerful, and that many of them actually develop healthier eating habits and workout regimens when they go to college. Some, of course, gain quite a bit of weight and go downhill, but I’ve been impressed in recent years at the amazing fitness level of some of the top college gymnasts.
Notice also the difference in music selection among these gymnasts when compared to elites. While some college routines are a bit too “techno” or “cheesy,” all of the ones below are far from it…they are simply entertaining. I feel that many elite routines these days lack this important entertainment aspect because there seems to be a fear of hip-hop types of music. They often stick to more traditional classical music, or some become a bit rebellious and go a little jazzy, but the truth is that many of them are extremely boring. Is it partly because the elite gymnasts haven’t gotten comfortable letting loose in their dance, and when they get to college they simply come out of their shell? Would it be a crime for them to try and have as much fun as the gymnasts below?

My vote goes to Allyse Ishino! I think that’s definitely one of the best choreographed floor routines of all time. Of course she’s not showing difficult tumbling passes, but I have a feeling she’s putting more energy (and burning more calories!) during that floor routine than gymnasts showing world-class tumbling. I think Jeanette Antolin’s is pretty awesome too.

And of course Anna Li's new routine- amazing.
Anyone else noticing a major UCLA trend here?? Maybe Miss Val should just choreograph for the US team!
