Valeri Liukin Invitational!
Let’s take a look at some of the routines from world team members Danell Leyva and Jonathan Horton at the recent Valeri Liukin Invite from December.

Leyva added a Liukin!!! How ironic that he adds Valeri Liukin’s own skill – a full twisting layout Tcatchev – at Valeri’s very own competition! Not sure if that was intentional, but what a nice tribute nonetheless! Of course we’ve seen a handful of gymnasts do this skill over the years (although still not many), but I believe Danell is the first gymnast I’ve ever seen do a giant out of it. Most gymnasts don’t get that kind of turnover on that skill. In fact, watch an even better one done in practice:

WOW! He could TOTALLY connect something out of that, and I bet he’s planning on it. Will Danell be the first gymnast to use the Liukin in a release combination???

It’s great to see Horton still in such great competition shape after his disastrous worlds. You can’t do SIX world class tumbling passes without being in incredible condition. That p-bar routine has gotten stronger as well – he’s added the Morisue! And on high bar apparently that was his second go at his routine because his grips broke on the first! I guess he must have had an extra pair broken in fortunately. Interestingly it looked like he was tapping for a third Kovacs but aborted it.

Actually, someone has done a Liukin in combination before, they did a Liukin immediate Gienger.
Also, Leyva's high bar is incredible, but too LONG. I can't believe they reduced the number of skill to 8 for women but not men. Men's routines are just too long.
